4th GRADE SCIENCE - Mrs. Fratessa

 

Week 1- Investigating Science Introduces the nature of science, the scientific process, and the habits required to solve problems.

Week 2 - Properties of Matter Explores the concept that all matter has properties that can be seen and measured, discusses some of the specific properties of matter. 

Week 3 - Changes in Matter Discusses how matter can be changed from one state to another and how it can be combined physically or chemically. 

Week 4 - A Microscopic World  Introduces the world of atoms, elements, particles, and tools for magnification and observation. 

Week 5 - Energy  Explores the various forms of energy, the flow of energy in a system, and the ways energy can be changed from one form to another. 

Week 6 - Light and Sound Discusses the properties of light (e.g., speed, reflection, refraction) and sound (e.g., vibration, pitch, volume). 

Week 7 - Magnets and Electricity Introduces the relationship of electric charges, magnetic forces, and electric currents.

Week 8- Move It  Discusses motion, speed, and direction, explores ways that motion can be predicted, measured, and described. 

Week 9 - Force Factor  Explores different types of forces and how they affect objects, examines ways that forces can be predicted, measured, and described. 

Week 10 - Shaping the Earth Discusses the processes that shape the earth, explores the constant change brought about by waves, weather, and shifting landmasses. 

Week 11 - Oceans and Waterways  Examines the characteristics of various bodies of water and explores the various forms of life that exist in Earth's oceans, rivers, and streams. 

Week 12 - Soil  Introduces the properties of different types of soil, the organisms that affect soil, and how the quality of soil affects growing plants. 

Week 13 - Weather and Climate  Explores weather patterns, seasons, and meteorology, examines ways weather is predicted, observed, and recorded. 

Week 14 - Natural Disasters Discusses various types of natural disasters (e.g., floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.) and their effect on living things and their environments.  

Week 15 - Protect and Conserve  Examines ways natural resources improve the quality of life, discusses the importance of protecting and conserving natural resources. 

Week 16 - Stars, Moons, and Planets Discusses the characteristics of celestial bodies and the organization of stars, moons, and planets in our solar system. 

Week 17 - Earth's Place in the Universe  Explores the relationship of Earth to the sun, moon, and other planets, introduces ways solar energy can be used on Earth. 

Week 18 - Science and Technology  Explores the relationship of science and technology in modern society, discusses responsibilities of scientists and researchers. 

Week 19 - Cells and Organisms  Examines the structure and function of living things, looks at the similarities and differences among various types of organisms. 

Week 20 - Heredity and Diversity Discusses inherited traits in various living things and the importance of genetic diversity to the survival and well-being of organisms. 

Week 21 - Ecosystems  Explores the ways living things interact with their environment and with each other, discusses how different environments sustain different organisms.  

Week 22 - Competition and Adaptation Focuses on birds and discusses the importance of adaptation-how it allows birds to compete in their environments and, ultimately, to survive as a species. 

Week 23 - Earth's Plants  Explores the process by which plants grow, thrive, and reproduce, discusses the importance of plants to people and animals. 

Week 24 - Earth's Animals Discusses characteristics and behavior of various land animals, examines various habitats that sustain animal life. 

Week 25 - Endangered and Extinct Species Examines various species of extinct and endangered animals, distinguishes among extinct, endangered, and threatened. 

Week 26 - Our Body's Systems Introduces the major organ systems of the human body and their functions. 

Week 27 - Keeping Fit and Healthy Discusses the importance of staying fit and healthy, explores ways people can achieve and maintain good health. 

Week 28 - Science and Medicine Explores the science of medicine, discusses advances in the medical field in the past, present, and future.

Week 4 - Turn on the Heat  Gives foundation for understanding heat transfer, temperature, expansion and contraction.

Week 5 - Sound and Light  Explores the wonders of sound and light.

Week 6 - Electricity and Magnetism  Introduces basic concepts of electricity and magnetism.

Week 7 - The Universe in Motion Looks at the principles of motion and force. 

Week 8 - Technology Past, Present and Future  Compares simple machines and modern technology.

Week 9 - Our Technological World  Discusses major technologies in today's society.

'Week 10 - From Crust to Core Introduces the structure of the earth and plate tectonics.

Week 11 - Shaping the Earth  Examines the rock cycle, volcanoes, earthquakes and glaciers.

Week 12 - All About Soil  Studies soil horizons, soil content, and erosion.

Week 13 - Our Life-Giving Oceans  Looks at how oceans provide air, food, water, and other resources for life on earth.

Week 14 - Save Our Planet Explores protection and conservation of natural resources and compares renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. 

Week 15 - The Water Cycle  Studies the water cycle and weather.

Week 16 - Keep Your Eye on the Sky Looks at the four seasons and the relationship between the sun, the moon and Earth.

Week 17 - Exploring Our Solar System  Gives an overview of the solar system, including recent astronomical discoveries.

Week 18 - Our Universe  Explores galaxies, constellations, stars, nebulae, and black holes.

Week 19 - Our Living World  Examines diversity of life and taxonomy, introduces the five kingdoms.

Week 20 - Cells and Microbes Explores the world of microscopic organisms.

Week 21 - Heredity  Introduces inherited traits, environmental adaptation, and survival. 

Week 22 - The Plant Kingdom Looks at plant diversity, photosynthesis, and pollination.

Week 23 - The Animal Kingdom  Introduces basic animal taxonomy, diversity, and endangered species.

Week 24 - Animal Behavior Looks at some of the amazing capabilities of animals.

Week 25 - Prehistoric Life Introduces scientific time periods, and discusses some dinosaurs and early mammals.

Week 26 - Systems of Life Explores ecosystems, food chains, and Earth's fragile environments.

Week 27 - Being Human Studies the human organism, its body systems and their functions, and basic anatomy.

Week 28 - The Amazing Brain A fascinating look at our brains, our senses and the way people learn.
